I, too, was amazed by the statistic of how we perceive ourselves as shy. Even more interesting, when I wrote the first version of my book in 1988, the stat from the Stanford Shyness Clinic was 80%. That huge jump of 13% by 2000 was attributed to our use of technology rather than real time social interaction. That is the basis of my new book: Face to Face: How To Reclaim The Personal Touch in a Digital World.
I have another suggestion for those who are uncomfortable upon entering rooms full of people we may not know: Instead of dwelling on our own comfort or lack of it, focus on making others comfortable with us. That abates some of our self consciousness and helps us reachout to help others who may be more uncomfortable … and even shy.
