Shouting match errupts at propane explosion meeting

TORONTO — A media briefing at the site of a massive propane explosion in Toronto degenerated into a shouting match between a public official and residents Wednesday.

City Coun. Maria Augimeri was there to address concerns about asbestos after the hazardous material was found in the neighbourhood. But she was confronted by several angry residents. Augimeri accused one man of using the death of a firefighter for partisan purposes and told him to “shut up.”

Sunday morning’s blasts at Sunrise Propane Industrial Gases sent orange fireballs into the sky and displaced thousands of residents.

One firefighter died at the scene, and another body was found at the explosion site Monday night.
